Motion of any kind tends to tweak a dogâs territorial instinct. It wonât matter to your dog whether the moving object is a squirrel, the neighborâs cat, another dog, or a mail truck. Once his instinct is aroused, he must investigate. The hunting instinct comes into play here as well, particularly if what your dog sees corresponds to one of the major food groups. Watching one toothsome meal after another pass before him, your dog may not be able to contain his desire to break free and claim such fertile territory as his own.
An open window is the devilâs doorway. Escape from a ground floor window can have perilous consequences, which will be discussed below. Similar flights from a high-rise apartment window or terrace are almost always fatal. The only way to prevent such tragedy and still enjoy fresh air is to provide secure screens for every window. Screens that snap into the window frame itself, usually interchangeable with storm windows, afford the best protection.
Unfortunately, many apartment buildings donât supply these screens to residents, and even certain homes are fitted with windows that tilt in or out, rather than slide up or down. If you find yourself in this situation, you will have to install a screen or gate. Screens should be made of sturdy, tear-resistant mesh, while gates should be made of metal. Both should be wide and tall enough to encompass the entire window, and securely anchored inside the window frame, rather than between the edge of the window and the sash. A strong or persistent dog will usually find a way to push a loose screen free.
